Meet our African Grey Parrots
The African Grey Parrot is a well known species of parrot, they are found in West and Central Africa and have distinctive grey feathers and bright red tails. If you visit the park you might be able to hear our parrots before you see them as they have an incredible ability to mimic a variety of sounds and in general are very loud creatures. In studies the African Grey Parrot has been recorded to have the cognition of a 5 year old child, this intelligence allows them to have strong communication skills within flocks and even learn tricks and learn specific commands.
Range
African Grey Parrots are native to West and Central Africa including Kenya, Congo and Uganda. They inhabit rainforests and have a wide range within the area.
Diet
These parrots have a varied diet that includes fruits, nuts, seeds, and vegetables. Is important to provide a balanced diet to ensure great health.
Lifespan
African Grey Parrots have a long lifespan, with some individuals living up to 50-60 years in captivity. We take great care of our parrots to ensure they live happy and healthy lives. Due to their long lived lives we strongly discourage the owning of parrots, they are classed as a heirloom pet meaning they often outlive their owners.
Conservation Status
Due to habitat loss and the pet trade, African Grey Parrots are classified as endangered. By visiting Greenacres Animal Park, you are supporting our conservation efforts to protect these incredible birds in the wild as well as allowing us to educate the public on how amazing these birds are.
