Meet Our Red-bellied Piranhas
Red-Bellied Piranhas have a reputation for being very aggressive and are seen as quite a scary fish. They live in protective packs which is known as a school with up to 100 individuals. They typically grow to be 25cm in length and they can also shed and regrow their teeth.
Range
Red-bellied Piranhas can be found in the Amazon River basin in South America. They prefer slow-moving waters with dense vegetation.
Diet
Red-bellied Piranhas are omnivores and mainly feed on fish, insects, and plants. They are known for their sharp teeth and powerful jaws.
Lifespan
These fascinating creatures can live up to 10 years in the wild. At Greenacres Animal Park, we provide a safe and comfortable environment for them to thrive.
Conservation Status
Red-bellied Piranhas are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN Red List. However, habitat destruction and overfishing pose threats to their population.
