Meet our Budgerigars

The Budgerigar, often known as the "Budgie," is a small, colourful parrot native to Australia. With their playful personalities and striking plumage, they are one of the most popular pet birds worldwide. In the wild, they are highly social creatures, known for living in large flocks and displaying remarkable adaptability. Despite being abundant in their native range, they face some challenges in the wild due to habitat loss and human activities. Whether in the wild or as a beloved pet, Budgerigars continue to captivate bird enthusiasts around the globe.

Range

The Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) is native to Australia, where they can be found across the country’s arid interior and coastal regions. These small parrots are especially common in the open woodlands and grasslands of the outback, often forming large, noisy flocks.

Diet

In the wild, Budgerigars primarily feed on seeds, especially those from grasses and shrubs. They also consume fruits and vegetables when available. In captivity, a balanced diet consisting of seed mixes, fresh fruits, vegetables, and occasional greens helps ensure their health.

Lifespan

Budgerigars typically live 5 to 10 years in the wild. However, when cared for in captivity with a proper diet, mental stimulation, and veterinary care, they can live up to 15 years or more.

Conservation Status

While the Budgerigar is not currently considered endangered and has a stable population in its natural habitat, it faces threats from habitat loss, climate change, and the illegal pet trade. However, due to their adaptability and large numbers, they remain widespread across Australia.
