Meet Our Green Iguanas
The Green Iguana is a large arboreal reptile, despite the name Green Iguana, they can actually come in a range of colours including brown, grey or green. In the wild they can often be seen basking in the sun or even swimming! Iguanas are very good swimmers, using their large and powerful tail to help propel them, if disturbed they can often be seen taking the plunge into a body of water to escape any dangers.
Range
Our Green Iguanas can be found in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. They love basking in the sun and climbing trees.
Diet
Green Iguanas are herbivores, feasting on a diet of leaves, fruits, and flowers. We make sure they have a balanced and nutritious meal plan at Greenacres Animal Park.
Lifespan
With proper care and a healthy environment, Green Iguanas can live up to 20 years or more. Our team is dedicated to ensuring they lead a long and happy life.
Conservation Status
Green Iguanas are listed as least concern on the conservation status scale. However, threats like habitat loss and illegal pet trade pose dangers to their population.
Did You Know?
- Green Iguanas have a unique third eye on the top of their head called a parietal eye, which helps them detect predators from above.
- They are able to hold their breath for up to 30 minutes.
- Iguanas can drop their tail, they do this in high stress situations to create a distraction long enough for them to escape, the still wiggling tail on the ground will attract the attention away from the iguana.
