Meet Our Capybaras

Capybara are a semi-aquatic rodent, they are actually the largest rodent in the world. They are specially adapted to the semi-aquatic lifestyle with webbed feet, a round body and facial features that are closer to the top of their head to allow them to submerge themselves in water and be able to keep a look out for any danger.

Range

Capybaras are mainly found in regions of South America, such as Brazil, Venezuela, and Colombia. They are usually found near bodies of water like rivers, lakes, and ponds.

Diet

Capybaras are herbivores, meaning they only eat plants. Their diet consists of grasses, aquatic plants, fruits, and vegetables.

Lifespan

In the wild, capybaras can live up to 8-10 years, while in captivity, they can live even longer, up to 12 years or more.

Conservation Status

Capybaras are classified as "Least Concern" by the IUCN Red List, as their populations are stable in the wild. However, habitat loss and hunting still pose threats to their survival.

Did You Know?

  • Capybaras are highly social animals and live in groups of 10-20 individuals, known as herds. They are classes as semi-aquatic and often enjoy swimming and soaking in water to regulate their body temperature.
  • When first discovered in the 18th century Spanish soldiers relied on Capybara for food, they were unable to identify them as a species so they wrote to the Pope in Rome describing the creature to taste salty and fish-like. The Pope then determined the Capybara to be classified as a fish, this then got changed after sightings to a mammal.
  • Their thick wire hair allows them to dry off quickly when getting in and out of the water.
