Meet Our African Crested Porcupines
African Crested Porcupines are one of around 40 different species in the world, they can range in location such as Africa and America, they can also range in size, colour and ability. There is a large misconception about porcupines that they are able to shoot their quills, this is not true. What they are able to do is back themselves into a target and stick their quills into them that way. When pressure is applied to a quill, the quill has a release mechanism and allows it to be disconnected and used as its self-defence. It is very difficult to remove the quills because of microscopic barbing found on the tip of the quill, when pulled the barbing splays out making the surface area larger.
